Facebook Now Has More Than 42 Million Pages And 9 Million Apps

Facebook has seen substantial growth in both pages and apps since December 31 2011.   There are now more than 42 million pages, an increase of 5 million, and there are now more that 9 million apps, an increase of 2 million.  All in less than 6 months.

Facebook did not provide a break down of what types of pages the 42 million are.  Pages can be created by brands, user generated community pages or popular figures.  However, Facebook did announce in a letter to prospective investors that more than 4 million businesses have pages on Facebook.

The number of apps significantly increased to over 9 million.  This number is likely to grow with the implementation of the new open graph system.  This increase also illustrates the growing competition for users attention.  It is becoming increasingly important to have a page and application that stand out from the pack.

Facebook Users Spent 10.5B Total Minutes Per Day On The Site. Not Including Mobile Use.

According to an updated S-1 filing Facebook users spent more than 10.5 billion total minutes on the site in January.   This number only includes those accessing Facebook from their PC’s and does not take in to consideration the quickly growing mobile user base.

This number is particular important to Facebook for advertising revenue.  With 845 million month active users that averages out to 12.4 minutes a day.  The longer a user stays on the site the more advertising they will be exposed to ads.  Facebook stated that aggregate minutes per day increased 57% year over year since January 2011.

These numbers do not take in to account one of the largest growing sections of Facebook users: mobile.  With Facebook announcing that sponsored stories would be displayed in the mobile news feed they essentially offered advertisers another method of reaching a huge market.  With 432 million mobile users as of December 31, 2011 and million of those accessing Facebook solely through their mobile devices, this is a huge untapped market.

With Facebook steadily increasing the time per day users spend on the site and allowing marketers to use the mobile platform, it is becoming a must to include Facebook in any marketing campaign.

Facebook Improves Photo Viewer

Facebook has announced yet another upgrade to the photo viewing function.  Photos will be displayed in a higher resolution.  Users will also have to the option to expand the photo to a full screen view. In order to expand to the full screen view they must click the two arrows in the top right of the photo.  Expanding the photo also removes all buttons and ads.  Currently the full screen option is only available in Firefox and Chrome browsers. Facebook released the following image to show the improvement in the new viewer:

This new option will enable brands to display high res photos on their page with instructions on how to expand the photo.    This could be yet another valuable tool for brands to implement in their Facebook Campaigns.

Facebook Alters Appearance Of Permalink Pages

Facebook has updated the permalink page for individual posts.  The new look will mirror the style of the new Timeline format.  The appearance of permalink pages use to be displayed on a white background however this look did not mesh with the new Timeline format.  Permalink pages will now appear on a lite blue background.

All posts on Facebook have a unique URL that simply shows your post/content by itself. The way you can access this permalink is by clicking on the time-stamp (of when you created the post).  That will then take you to the permalink page.

The most notable change to permalink pages is the addition of a large and prominently displayed “like” button and “subscribe” button.  This could lead to far more likes for brands as users who have no association to the brand page will be able to see their posts if a friend has liked or commented on them.  With the option to subscribe and like this is a significant improvement for brands looking to leverage the new Timeline format.
