Facebook Now Has More Than 42 Million Pages And 9 Million Apps

Facebook has seen substantial growth in both pages and apps since December 31 2011.   There are now more than 42 million pages, an increase of 5 million, and there are now more that 9 million apps, an increase of 2 million.  All in less than 6 months.

Facebook did not provide a break down of what types of pages the 42 million are.  Pages can be created by brands, user generated community pages or popular figures.  However, Facebook did announce in a letter to prospective investors that more than 4 million businesses have pages on Facebook.

The number of apps significantly increased to over 9 million.  This number is likely to grow with the implementation of the new open graph system.  This increase also illustrates the growing competition for users attention.  It is becoming increasingly important to have a page and application that stand out from the pack.

Facebook Launches New APIs To Ease Transition To Timeline

Facebook announced that they have launched new APIs  to support some of the new features associated with the Timeline format for pages.

The new APIs will manage:

  • Messages
  • Milestones
  • About section
  • Apps
  • and Posts.

By implementing these APIs, it will allow page management applications to successfully manage these various features.

One of the key APIs is the messages.  This API will allow brands  to incorporate messages in to a page management tool meaning that, in theory, they could assign messages as tickets to specific individuals as opposed to having their page manager respond to all incoming messages without the ability to escalate.

With these new APIs, brands will also be able to have 3rd party apps manage milestones, page posts, upload cover photos and change tab app icons.  For more information check out the Facebook Developers Blog.

Quick News Feed Marketing Stats

A new study by Social Marketer Training states that 27% of all Facebook engagement takes place on the news feed.  Furthermore, the study says that users are 40 to 150 times more likely to engage with marketing offers that appear on the news feed than go to the corresponding brands page.  Utilizing the news feed can spread your message to a much wider audience than posting offers on your brands page, if done correctly.

Do Likes Equal Brand Loyalty?

According to eMarketer having fans like your brand does not necessarily result in brand loyalty.  This comes after they reviewed the data collected in a study performed by Evoc Insights.

The main findings that were analyzed were:  59% of Facebook users have liked a page of either a brand of a company over the last six months.  Of those users 54% stated that they were more likely to make a purchase from a company that they have “liked” .

Although it seems that this would be indicative of brand loyalty eMarketer released the following statement in regards to the findings:

The link between likes and loyalty remains unclear. Although consumers respond favorably about their likelihood to purchase from a brand they follow on Facebook, that’s not overly evident from their Facebook timelines. Marketers should keep in mind that for consumers, Facebook remains primarily a place to interact with peers and share experiences. Although many consumers have opened up to brands that are present on Facebook, brand marketers should not expect that they’ve earned consumer loyalty simply because a consumer has clicked the like button.

Although this statement may be correct, it seems that it is not taking in to account the benefit of the exposure that brands receive through likes.  Although likes may not  lead directly to brand loyalty it certainly provides an organic method in which to display your brand and products to a broad audience.  So does having a lot of likes lead directly to brand loyalty?  That remains to be seen.

But is having a lot of likes beneficial to your brand?  Absolutely.

More than 50% of Facebook Users Respond to Social Media Marketing

Facebook has become the premier platform among social media sites for brands to market their products.  It easily surpasses Twitter and Linkedin in this particular area of marketing.  The study states that more than half of Facebook users are more inclined to recommend a brand or product to their friends after they become a fan of its Page. Also over half are also more likely to buy a product from a brand after Liking its Page.

The studies top ten Findings were as follows:

  • Consumers interact with their favorite brand on Facebook far more than other social networks.
  • 56 percent of consumers said they are more likely to recommend a brand to a friend after becoming a fan on Facebook.
  • 51 percent of consumers said they are more likely to buy a product since becoming a fan on Facebook.
  • 52 percent of those who go online said that they spend at least one hour a week on Facebook.
  • 76 percent of consumers said they have never Unliked a brand on Facebook
