Facebook’s Open Graph: A Quick Summary On How To Get Started

Today we’re going to go over some key areas of the Open Graph and how to get started.  If you’d like a quick overview of the impact of the new Facebook super applications that will be released to users time lines, you can get more information by reading Bret Taylor’s (Facebook’s CTO) blog post.

In order to get started you must first define the application functionality in terms of what actions you’d like to be published in people’s news feeds, while making deep and relevant connections.  These are things such as:

      1. Actions: these are things people can do within your app.
      2. Objects: the type of things users can interact with your app.

Once you’ve determined what your actions and objects will be, you’ll be prompted to select how you’d like the aggregations to look like in the user’s timeline.

Please visit the Facebook Developer blog for more information on setting up your Open Graph app.   Facebook also offers a very easy to follow and comprehensive tutorial on how to set up a Facebook Open Graph Application.

A Visit to Facebook Headquarters: f8 LiveStream

Today, Mario Zelaya, the Managing Director of Majestic Media had the pleasure of attending the f8 LiveStream event that was held at the Facebook Head Office in Canada.

Some really major announcements were made that will affect how applications and social interactions are going to be defined in the social network.  Essentially, Mark Zuckerberg best summarized the new changes by stating that the first 5 years, they were focussed on connecting people with one another.  Now that they’ve connected over 800 million users, the next evolution of Facebook is to create deep engagement, accomplished through the revised newsfeed (and news ticker), the new open graph 2.0, and more importantly, the new profile that they call “timeline” which will be rolled out in the next couple of months.
